Forest Forum on At-Risk Species Listings & How They Impact Forest Management

Thursday, November 10, 2016    9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Solon Dixon Education Center - Andalusia, Alabama

Please join the Forest Landowners Association (FLA) for a Forest Forum to increase dialogue and strengthen relationships between forest landowners and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The conversation will focus on at-risk species listings, rulings and the impact on managing your forestland for economic returns, as well as the utilization of cost-share programs.

FLA has been working with the FWS, Division of Conservation and Classification in Washington, DC and the Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta to establish open discussion and a better understanding of how family forest landowners can work with the FWS and meet forest management and economic objectives.

For FWS representatives forest landowners and managers will discuss:

  • How forest management activities supporting a sustained yield of timber products are compatible with enhancing wildlife habitats

  • Landowners’ desire for long-term sustainability of the forests and their ecosystems

  • Landowners’ need to create economic returns on their land and the need for open market

access to support sustainable forestry practices

For landowners and forests managers, FWS representatives will discuss:

    • The process FWS undertakes before, during and after a proposed listing

    • Recently proposed at-risk species rules and future listings

    • How private landowners can engage in the listing process outcome

    • Programs to help landowners develop a conservation strategy for at-risk species that are

consistent with their land management needs while providing regulatory assurances

For landowners and forests managers, conservation and wildlife stakeholders will discuss cost share opportunities and their role in at-risk species listings:

      • Alabama DCNR’s role in at-risk species reviews, determinations and rules

      • NRCS cost share opportunities and addressing the AGI issue

      • Cost share opportunities outside of federal programs

      • FWS’s Partners for Wildlife Program
