Endangered Species Act

The United States House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources has continued its oversight responsibilities of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) during the 112th Congress by holding numerous full committee hearings. It has been 24 years since Congress has reauthorized or made any significant, responsible improvements to the Endangered Species Act to ensure that it works for both species and people. FLA believes that after more than two decades, the ESA should be modernized and updated to once again focus the law on true species recovery.

Signed into law in 1973, the goal of the Endangered Species Act was to preserve, protect and recover key domestic species. However, today the law is failing to achieve its primary purpose of species recovery and instead has become a tool for litigation that drains resources away from real recovery efforts and blocks job-creating economic activities.

Late last week, CEO Scott Jones and Executive Committee member Rob Olszewski met with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Regional Director, Cindy Dohner. A productive discussion ensued on how the service can work closely with FLA to the mutual benefit of both private landowners and the Service.

Be on the lookout for an article in next month’s Forest Landowner Magazine with detail regarding the recent activities of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
