FLA Hosts Successful National Forest Landowners Advocacy Day

September 22, 2010

The Forest Landowners Association, in partnership with the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports and the Forest Landowners Tax Council hosted the 2010 National Forest Landowners Advocacy Day on September 13 and 14. Over 80 attendees enjoyed taking in the sights of Capitol Hill and meeting with their members of Congress to share their personal experiences owning and operating forestland, and views on issues affecting forestland.

On September 13, attendees learned about prominent issues for this year’s Advocacy Day, including the correct definition of wood for “renewable biomass” in any energy bill, carbon neutrality of wood biomass, permanent repeal of the death tax or a substantive move in that direction, the Canadian softwood lumber situation, regulatory over-reach, and other issues affecting forest landowner property rights.

On September 14, attendees benefited from a breakfast at Charlie Palmer Steak and a presentation about the death tax by Dick Patten, Executive Director of theAmerican Family Business Institute (AFBI). AFBI is a national organization of family business owners devoted to the permanent repeal of the Federal Estate Tax. Participants then visited Capitol Hill and were divided into staff-guided groups based on region to attend 20 minute meetings with their members of Congress.

After a day of meetings on Capitol Hill, attendees enjoyed a reception at the Capitol Visitors Center and presented Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin (D-SD) with the Forest Landowner Champion Award for her vigorous support of wood as energy and her leadership in promoting the Farm Bill definition of renewable biomass in House energy legislation.
