OPENING KEYNOTE: THE FUTURE OF FOREST LANDOWNERSHIP

These are dynamic times for private forest landowners. With rollercoaster markets for land and timber in recent years and new markets emerging for timber products both domestically and abroad, how should landowners plan for the near term and the future? As CEO of American Forest Management, which manages nearly 6 million acres of forest and agricultural land across the U.S., Brent Keefer provides insight into the ever-changing world of private forestland ownership.

POLICY CONCERNS AND THE 2024 ELECTIONS

The Forest Landowners Association works to protect the rights of its members from misguided state and federal policies and regulations. This is an ongoing effort to educate and inform elected and appointed policymakers about the realities of forest landownership and its economic and environmental contributions. This discussion, featuring FLA staff members and moderated by a former FLA President, reviews the state of affairs in Washington, FLA’s current policy goals, and how the 2024 elections could impact them.

SUCCESSION ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS

Forest landowner succession planning presents many challenges as landowners strive to pass land on seamlessly to the next generation. At last year’s conference in Nashville, Forest Landowner magazine editor Pete Williams drew upon his family succession story as part of a panel of landowners. This year, he speaks with tax and succession planning experts to help landowners navigate the process financially, and emotionally, and to minimize tax consequences.

STATE OF FOREST LANDOWNERSHIP

A staple of the National Conference of Private Forest Landowners for more than a decade, this panel discussion takes the pulse of larger family forest landowners during a fluid and, at times, turbulent current marketplace. Attendees will have an opportunity to compare their thinking on timber and other markets, policy development, upcoming election impact, and forest management with some of the sector’s most insightful insiders.

UNLOCKING YOUR PROPERTY’S VALUE

What should landowners be doing to generate the most value from their land? How can they improve their land, buy more of it, and extract more from it? In what has become an annual tradition at the National Conference of Private Forest Landowners, Eric O’Keefe, editor of The Land Report, provides an overview of the land market before taking a deep dive into tools that landowners can use to increase both the profitability and the size of their holdings. This panel will challenge landowners to move beyond their traditional thought processes and learn about new tools to help them grow and expand their holdings.

A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY: USING DATA AND STORYTELLING TO SHOW HOW YOUR FOREST BENEFITS EVERYONE

Today’s private forest landowners operate in a landscape with ever-changing demands from the public to show that private forests are managed sustainably. The Forest Landowners Foundation – and many of its partners – are taking a more proactive approach to telling the story of stewardship on behalf of America’s private forest landowners. This panel will explore the history of sustainability demands on private forests, where experts see this challenge in the future, and how FLF and some of its partners have pioneered proactive approaches to meet public demands for transparency and sustainability in private forest management.

CARBON MARKETS AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR PRIVATE FOREST LANDOWNERS

Voluntary carbon markets and the opportunities and challenges they present for private forest landowners have evolved considerably since FLA first examined this topic at the 2021 conference in Williamsburg, Va. We revisit how landowners can best capture this opportunity while balancing it with more traditional revenue opportunities like fiber and timber harvests. This panel features representatives from companies active in the ever-changing forest carbon marketplace.
