Forestry Political Appointments
Earlier this month, Homer Lee Wilkes was nominated by President Obama as the next Under Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Mr. Wilkes is a 28-year veteran of the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), which focuses on farmland conservation. The Under Secretary position is responsible for the U.S. Forest Service and NRCS.
Mr. Wilkes is familiar with American private forest landowners because of his long background working in Mississippi. Many FLA members have worked at the local level with Mr. Wilkes and praised his effectiveness and understanding of private forestland.
Jay Jensen has been appointed Deputy Under Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment at USDA. Jay was previously Executive Director of the Council of Western State Foresters/Western Forestry Leadership Coalition. Jay has worked closely with FLA in the past and FLA is confident Jay will be effective in this capacity.
