CapWiz Action Alert: Important Estate Tax Vote
Call Your Senators
Two Estate Tax-related amendments have been introduced to the Senate Budget Resolution (the legislation that allocates tax dollars for the year). Currently, the Budget Resolution language has a 45% tax rate with a $3.5 million exemption.
Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) has introduced an Estate Tax repeal amendment.
Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) have introduced an amendment to lower the Estate Tax rate to 35% and increase the exemption to $5 million. (More likely to pass)
Both of these amendments would be a substantial step forward, but neither amendment would be full victory. Why?
The Budget Resolution does not actually finalize any tax or spending law, but it sets the parameters under which Congress makes these decisions. If Congress has not planned for Estate tax funding, they do not budget for those funds. But if they plan to use those specific funds, it will be much more difficult to repeal or reform the tax while the budget has plans to spend those funds.
Senator DeMint's amendment is preferred, but either amendment would be a substantial victory for the cause of full Estate Tax repeal.
We need you to call your U.S. Senators and let them know you expect them to vote to repeal or reform (as a means to repeal) the Federal Estate tax by voting FOR the DeMint Estate Tax Amendment and FOR the Kyl/Lincoln Estate Tax Amendment
