 2012 FLA Member Meetings:

Agenda, site selection, and promotional effort all combine to create an effective FLA regional meeting. We’ll dedicate more time to planning to ensure that all the bases are covered for our 2012 Schedule of Meetings.

To gain in sight on what you’re interested in learning about, we surveyed a portion of the members and asked them to rank 22 different subjects. Here are the top five responses from over 200 FLA members:
1. Economic Forecasts  Housing/Forest Products
2. Forest Management Issues
3. Forest Products Market Report
4. Biomass Current and Future Markets
5. Forest Health Insects, Diseases, Invasive Species

We’ll focus on these issues and search for the very best speakers available. If you did not respond to the survey, but would like to voice your opinion, please let us know.
Member concentrations, staffing, and finances limit the second component, site selection. For 2012 we have selected the following locations:

Augusta, GA               Hattiesburg, MS              Charlotte, NC             Wilmington, DE
February March August October

We are beginning to work with members in each area to tailor the meetings to the local audience. Be watching for specific dates, locations, and further information next month.

More information is forthcoming on our National meetings as well. In the meantime, mark your calendar for the 2012 National Conference of Private Forest Landowners at the Sawgrass Marriott Ponte Vedra Beach Resort & Spa May 30 through June 1.

Corrections for the

November/December Issue

Mark Twain summed it up in 1893: In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made proof readers. Even though we make a diligent effort to make this magazine the best it can be, we do make mistakes; the last edition was no exception.

First of all, our apologies to Jeff Lageman who appeared on the cover of the last issue. It was a great article about this NFL star and active private forest landowner, but we misspelled Jeff's last name on the cover. We'll make it up to you Jeff!

Second, there are some late changes in the Cost and Cost Trends article. The minor changes occured in Table 2, which in turn, caused updates in Tables 11 &13. A corrected version can be found on the FLA website. Finally, Table 1 on page 38 in Stephen Pecot's article on Cogongrass was omitted. It too can be found on our website.

We apologize for any confusion.

   Dear FLA Members:  (CONTINUED) .......................................................................

Personally, I am looking forward to working with and for you in this coming year, shifting from vision and strategy, to creating a cooprerative ground-swell movement of volunteers who collectively show up and make a difference on behalf of all private forest landowners in the United States.

Best Wishes for a happy and successful New Year.

Derek Dougherty, President, Forest Landowners Association
