FLA holds Briefing for Congressional Ag. and Forestry Staff

Last week Scott Jones and Melinda Gable hosted a briefing for Senate and House Agriculture and Forestry staff to educate them on their private forest landowner constituents and how private forests under their management have a direct impact on our country’s environment and economy.

The main message included facts and figures that highlighted how private forests and their owners often get little recognition as an economic force, yet they have an impact on many sectors of the economy from small towns to the bottom line of Fortune 500 companies. Often thought of as a small constituency, private forest landowner's account for 423 million acres under management and contribute $130 billion in gross domestic product, and employee 2 million people in the United States.

Every year, Congress considers legislation with the potential to enhance or diminish forest landowners' ability to manage their land. The briefing served to strengthen relationships with staffers and establish FLA as a resource so they know how legislation can help or hurt their private forest landowner constituents.

Policy issues that were discussed included the Farm Bill, Death Tax Repeal, forest roads, pesticides and more. Staffers heard how FLA is a trusted source for information and insight on how legislation can impact the environment and local jobs, as well as the families and businesses that own and manage private forests and were invited to call on us when considering legislation.
