FLA Members Instrumental
in FL Biomass Plant Approval

On December 1, the Forest Landowners Association reported to you that FLA members had offered written and oral support in Florida for the Gainesville Renewable Energy Center (GREC), the biomass project that American Renewables is developing in Gainesville.  The project appeared before the "Siting Board," which is composed of the Governor and members of his Cabinet; the culmination of permitting activities for this facility. Today, FLA is pleased to announce that the 100-megawatt biomass power project planned for Gainesville, Florida, looks to have cleared some of its last regulatory hurdles before construction.  Developer American Renewables said Thursday that its Gainesville Renewable Energy Center received unanimous approval on Tuesday the 7th from the Florida Power Plant Siting Board.

Governor of Florida Charlie Crist, a member of the Board, said he had “great trust” in the groups supporting the project. That Tuesday also saw a second ruling from Judge Robert E Meale in favor of the project, rejecting a challenge to its air construction permit. The permit itself is expected to be finalized by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in the next few weeks.  Previously, the Florida administrative judge ruled last month that site certification be granted for the project.
