Call to Action for Florida Landowners
December 1, 2010
The Gainesville Renewable Energy Center (GREC), the biomass project that American Renewables is developing in Gainesville, Florida, will be appearing before the Siting Board on Tuesday, December 7 in Tallahassee, Florida. The project will utilize approximately one million tons of wood per year, including waste materials which currently have little or no value.
The Siting Board is composed of the Governor and the members of the Cabinet, and is the culmination of permitting activities for this facility. The Siting Board will determine whether the project receives its site certification, and thus whether or not it can move forward.
A small group of opponents of the project is actively trying to stop it, and has been spreading misinformation about the project and its impacts. It is important that supporters of the project make their voices heard. FLA is asking members of the forestry community to attend the Siting Board meeting on December 7 and speak in favor of the project.
FLA members have offered written and oral support for this project at two prior hearings, and we encourage you to help us see this project through. The Siting Board will be deciding the fate of the GREC on December 7.
Please contact FLA CEO Scott Jones if you plan to attend the Siting Board meeting. Within the next few days, he will then send additional information regarding the time and place of the hearing, as well as background information about the project and potential speaking points.
