FLA Participates in America's Great Outdoors Initiative

August 18, 2010

On August 9, Forest Landowners Association (FLA) CEO Scott Jones attended a listening session hosted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of the Interior (DOI) in Concord, New Hampshire. Speakers included Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and New Hampshire Governor John Lynch. The goal of this public listening session and discussion was to provide an opportunity for leaders of the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to hear from the public about the challenges and opportunities facing working forests on private lands, and solutions for building an effective private working forestland conservation and recreation agenda, and reconnecting people with the outdoors.

During the session, Jones commented that the USDA could assist private forest landowners by taking a lead role in both the administration and Congress when issues that adversely affect America’s forestlands are addressed. Specifically, Jones noted that landowners needed a broad definition of biomass in any energy legislation with the recognition that biomass is both carbon neutral and sustainable. He also commented on the adverse effect that the Death Tax has on private forestlands, and once again noted that the USDA could play a lead role in advocating for its repeal.
