FLA Files Amicus Brief Concerning Lumber Agreement Funds
June 23, 2010
On June 17, the Forest Landowners Association (FLA) filed an amicus brief in the case of Forest Stewardship Council v. USTR. Forest Stewardship Council, Conservation Northwest, and Center for Biological Diversity (plaintiffs) are appealing the dismissal of their complaint by the district court for lack of standing in their previous suit concerning the monies distributed in 2006 from the Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA). A majority of the meritorious initiatives funds were distributed to the American Forest Foundation and the US Endowment for Forestry and Communities and the plaintiffs in this case argued that these organizations should not have received the funds.
Since private forest landowners did not receive any direct financial compensation through the SLA, FLA believes that the funds distributed to these organizations could have considerable benefit to American forest landowners.
