Landowners Share Values and Challenges at the 2010 National Forest Landowners Conference

Rick Holley, President and CEO of Plum Creek Timber Company, was the keynote speaker last Friday at the 2010 National Forest Landowners Conference in Stevenson, Washington. As the largest private owner of forestland in the U.S., Holley and Plum Creek Timber Company recognize the importance of organizations like the Forest Landowners Association (FLA). “Now more than ever, it is essential to have groups like the Forest Landowners Association providing grassroots advocacy for private forest landowners in Washington, D.C.,” stated Holley.

Scott Jones, CEO of FLA, noted, “As the largest private forest landowner, Plum Creek offers a unique perspective and leadership role from which all private forest landowners benefit. We appreciate their leadership, and in recognition for their work on behalf of landowners, it was our pleasure to honor Plum Creek as the 2010 Forest Landowner Champion.”

Conference attendees also learned the latest on the U.S.-Canadian Softwood Lumber Agreement from Steve Swanson, President and CEO of the Swanson Group and current Chairman of the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports. Attendees enjoyed an update from Cassie Phillips, Vice President of Sustainable Forestry for Weyerhaeuser Company, on the latest push to have green building systems, such as LEED, recognize wood from private forests.

Attendees also benefited from an outstanding presentation by Clint Bentz, member of a full-service CPA firm in Oregon and Chair of the American Forest Foundation’s Board of Trustees, on succession planning for families that own timberland and want to keep it in the family for future generations. The 2010 National Forest Landowners Conference concluded with an informative landowner panel featuring landowners from Massachusetts, Washington, and Georgia, as well as a TIMO, who offered their thoughts on land ownership.

FLA would like to thank all the conference attendees, speakers, vendors, and sponsors for making the 2010 National Forest Landowners Conference a great success. We hope you will make plans to attend upcoming FLA meetings.
