Senate Urges EPA to Treat Biomass Fairly

July 7, 2010

Last week, the Forest Landowners Association added its support to an effort by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) to express their concerns to Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about the agency’s decision to regulate biomass emissions in the same manner and degree as fossil fuel emissions.

In an effort to curb this onerous EPA decision, FLA contacted every U.S. Senate office. FLA lobbyist Frank Stewart also made Capitol Hill visits to targeted Senate offices, asking them to sign the letter from Senators Lincoln and Chambliss to the EPA.

In their letter to their fellow Senate colleagues, Lincoln and Chambliss noted, "EPA’s decision contradicts long standing federal and international precedent, ignores clear Congressional intent regarding biomass policy, and discourages the responsible development of biomass utilization from public and private lands.”

Over one-third of the U.S. Senate signed onto the letter sending a strong message to the EPA that Congress does not intend to stand idly by and allow the agency to misinterpret their intentions to see woody biomass as a vital part of one of America’s renewable energy sources.
