Taking back the conversation from the environmentalists

It’s time to tell our story to the media, elected officials and the public!

The Forest Landowner Foundation is funding the development of a new community website designed to inform and engage the forestry community, media and policy makers.

In the words of FLA’s Immediate Past President Derek Dougherty, "For the last several decades, the two biggest limitations to landowner advocacy effectiveness and private forest property right protection in this country have been a lack of ability for like-minded advocacy groups to cooperate, and our collective inability or apathy to tell our story of true sustainability and stewardship for the land. Currently, both of these limitations are being addressed and overcome. The first through simple selflessness ("You can accomplish anything in life, provided that you don’t mind who gets the credit”, Harry Truman) and the second through this ‘hub’ of communication that is being produced through FLA and the community website. ” The absence of an effectively organized message online has allowed for a general misunderstanding of who the genuine caretakers of the forests are.

The media, general public and policy makers have a lack of understanding of how private forests benefit both our economy and environment. This fact hit home in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal on pellet markets that underscored this lack of understanding of how private landowners and the forests they manage are sustainable and economically viable at the same time.

FLA must take a leadership role on behalf of all private forest landowners and put the conversation back in the hands of the true stewards of our forests; private forest landowners.

The FLA board has taken quick and bold action to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that ensures the story and voice of private forest landowners is reaching the media, general public and policy makers at the federal and state level.

This community website will be aimed at:
  • Creating a united messaging campaign on the benefits of forests and the forestry industry
  • Creating a go to site for information on policy issues related to private forestry that will serve policy makers, media and forestry stakeholders;
  • Mobilizing stakeholders to take action and become advocates.
This is a big initiative and the Forest Landowner Foundation has committed $25,000 of matching funds that will increase your donation on a dollar for dollar basis. We need your financial support to make this happen. The time is now for our voice and message to be heard and to take the conversation and false perception back from the hands of environmentalists.
