Forest Landowners Association finalizes 2017-2020 Strategic Plan
Share |

During a November 15, 2016 teleconference the FLA Board of Directors approved a strategic plan that will be used to guide the organization’s efforts over the next three years. “The approval of our strategic plan is now small thing,” said FLA CEO Scott Jones. “A strategic plan that is well understood and agreed to by our board helps to keep the organization’s day-to-day work focused on what is most important.”

FLA President Scott Rowland underscored the importance of a strategic plan noting that the FLA has been a mission driven organization since it was founded. “A commitment to a well understood plan has been a hallmark of the FLA since it was formed in 1941,” he said. “Having a published strategic plan allows our members and all of our stakeholders and opportunity to understand what we’re up to and join us as we work towards our goals.”

The strategic plan specifically identifies five strategic goals for the organization in the years ahead.

1.     Maintain and increase the economic, environmental and social value of private forest lands.

2.     Facilitate discussions concerning stewardship and market access.

3.     Increase usage of domestic forest products.

4.     Keep private working forests working for future generations.

5.     Support the grassroots movement for private forest landowners.

In addition the strategic plan also identifies five specific ongoing commitments that the FLA has made to its membership.

1.     Create trust in America’s landowners as responsible stewards of forest resources and the environment.

2.     Communicate facts about the health and sustainability of America’s private forests to counter misinformation.

3.     Effectively communicate the benefits of private working forests for the public good.

4.     Facilitate informed decisions regarding forestry-related issues.

5.     Be a source for issues, facts and figures.

“It was crucial for the organization that we establish and vote on the strategic plan before the New Year,” said Jones. “We’re already at work on a variety of initiatives and efforts that will impact 2017 and beyond. Having a formal strategic plan in place gives us a touchstone to measure those efforts against to be sure they align with what we’ve agreed to do for our membership.”
