About FLA

What is the primary mission of FLA?

FLA is a leading advocate promoting the rights of all private landowners—regardless of size, corporate structure, location, certification status, or tax classification.

What type of organization is FLA?

FLA is a tax exempt, non-profit association organized under IRS section 501 c 5.

How is the association organized?

FLA is governed by a board of directors and executive committee elected by the members. The board employs a chief executive officer who has overall management responsibilities.

Does FLA work with government or non-governmental organizations?

We work with any organization that is interested in preserving the rights of forest landowners, promoting open market access for all forest products, and protecting the forest resource while considering the impacts of laws and regulations on the landowner.

 

 

FLA Membership

Who are the members of FLA?

Members range from small landowners with less than 100 acres to the largest TIMOs and REITs. All FLA members are interested in forest management; laws and regulations; and engaging Congress to encourage sensible and practical legislation.

Do I have to own land to be a member of FLA?

No. Our Associate membership is designed for inidividuals who do not own forestland and who are not consulting foresters.  

How do I renew my membership to FLA?

You will be sent a least two US Mail reminders before your expiration date. You can renew by calling 1-800-325-2954 or you can renew your membership on our website.

What information is presented in Forest Landowner Magazine?

Forest Landowner magazine presents private forest landowners across the country with guidance on forestland management options, applications of current forestry research, and national legislative issues that helps them sustain their forestland ownership.

Can I read articles from Forest Landowner Magazine online?

Yes. Members have access to full articles from each issue online. There are some full articles and partial articles available for free to the public here»

Is Forest Landowner Magazine available to non-members?

The magazine is available with membership only. Forest Landowner magazine is published six times per year and is usually shipped in the first week of January, March, May, July, September, and November.

What are Action Alerts?

Action Alerts are alerts of current government affairs issues and legislation that will impact landowners. These alerts are sent out via the FLA eNewsletter

FLA eNewsletter is the Forest Landowners Association’s bi-weekly e-newsletter that alerts members of current government affairs issues affecting them, in order to mobilize its national grassroots network on behalf of private forest landowners across the country. How do the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) work?

You can find information about Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) on the USDAs Farm Service Agency's website. And information about Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) can be found at the USDAs Natural Resources Conservation Service website.

Why should I attend the National Conference of Private Forest Landowners?

The National Conference of Private Forest Landowners offers a number of educational opportunities in forestland taxation, estate and succession planning, forest management, intensive silvaculture, etc. A member panel discussion will give you insight into the activities of your fellow landowners. Tours of forest products manufacturing facilities and timberlands are often included. Networking opportunities abound and there is a trade expo with leading vendors of goods and services for landowners.

Educational sessions at the National Conference qualify for Continuing Forestry Education Credits.

Are there smaller regional meetings available to me?

Regional meetings and events are scheduled periodically and a full listing can be found on our website. Regional meetings qualify for Continuing Forestry Education Credits.

 

Forest Landowner Foundation

What is the FLA Foundation and how is it different the association?

The Foundation 501(c)(3) organization with a separate board of Trustees. As with any 501 (c) entity, lobbying activity is prohibited and the results of any research are available to the public and government.

What does the Foundation do?

Forest Landowners Foundation encourages and develops:

  • Technical and practical forestry information.
  • Educational programs and effective teaching methods in forestry, and related subjects.
  • Students in careers of forestry and related fields.
  • Research in forestry and related fields.
  • Widespread knowledge and interest in forestry and related fields.
    • Providing information and education to assist landowners in caring for their forests.
    • Helping the general public appreciate the extensive benefits of forestry.
  • Educating the public about the benefits of forests and forest products.

How can I support the Foundation's efforts?

You may make a tax-deductible contribution to the FLA Foundation at any time.

 

Political Action Committee

Does FLA have a Political Action Committee?

Yes, In order for private forest landowners to be successful, we must have a place at the table to have our voices heard. More info about our PAC is online.

How does the PAC decide on what candidates to support?

The PAC board of Trustees works with the FLA CEO and lobbyist to select appropriate federal legislators.

How can I participate?

The Forest Landowners Association Political Action Committee (FLA-PAC) collects contributions from individuals, then disburses these funds to political candidates who support the goals and objectives of FLA. Your donation can help elect and retain those members of Congress who share our private land values. FLA Resources

Does FLA assist members with advice on game and fish management?

Not directly, but we often have fish & game articles in Forest Landowner Magazine. As a member, you may search back issues of the magazine where you'll find about a number articles on the subject. More info can be found in online in our Resources section.

Can FLA help me find a hunting lease?

We cannot help with hunting leases, but many of the larger TIMOs and REITs have lands available for lease. You can check their websites for additional information.

Can I get hunting lease insurance from FLA?

Yes, Discounted Insurance is a benefit of FLA Membership. FLA is affiliated with Lockton, Inc. in Kansas City Missouri. Lockton is the largest privately owned insurance broker in the world. For a quote call 1-800-658-7047. Mention that you are a member or would like to join FLA to take advantage of the insurance benefit. There is an errors and omissions policy available for consulting foresters. The contact information is the same as above.

Can FLA help me sell or buy forestland?

FLA provides easy access to real estate opportunities on our website through Lands of America. Buyers can browse over 60,000 tracts for sale, and sellers can sign up for a listing on this network of over 250 websites, which receive over 2 million visitors a month!

How can I find a consulting forester?

We provide a state-by-state listing of Consulting Foresters on our website.
