Massachusetts and Renewable Forest Biomass

Massachusetts has suspended all consideration of new biomass power for participation in the state's renewable portfolio standard (RPS) program until a state commissioned forest sustainability and carbon life cycle study is concluded. There exists opposition to forest biomass energy in Massachusetts due to concerns that using forest biomass as an energy source is not carbon neutral, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Additionally, some in Massachusetts believe a new market for wood will create unsustainable forest landscapes.

In response to this situation in Massachusetts, FLA sent a letter to the Governor of Massachusetts and the state's Department of Energy explaining the great need for new markets to keep Massachusetts' private forests sustainable, and asking for new biomass power facilities to be considered carbon neutral, citing tremendous evidence to that fact.
