2012 Year in Review

As we approach the end of the 2012 we take a moment to look back on FLA’s accomplishments on behalf of our members and then focus on looking forward to the potential of what can be accomplished in 2013. I would have to say the outlook for private forest landowners’ in Washington, DC and beyond is gaining strength through increased awareness of private forest landowner issues and strengthening coalitions with our allies.

It is through our advocacy, awareness, and coalition efforts that FLA will not only ensure short-term security for our stakeholders, but also set the stage for private forest landowner’s long-term security.

Reflecting on politics from the White House and down Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Congress, I think everyone would agree that the public is tired of the partisan bickering and political posturing that is resulting in detrimental outcomes for the short and long-term viability of our economy. However, I am pleased to say that this past year the forestry community came together in unity and collaboration to the likes I have not seen in the past.

Weather it was coordinating testimony on key priorities on Capitol Hill or working with federal agencies on policies and regulations, by speaking with a coordinated voice, forestry stakeholders will achieve more success in 2013.

FLA’s grassroots efforts along with our forestry partners resulted in bolstered co-sponsorship and support of pro-forestry legislation.

FLA has built new and strengthened existing coalitions with Partners in DC over the year. To list just a few NAFO, National Association of State Foresters, American Farm Bureau Federation, AF&PA and American Forest Foundation. All of these partners, and many more, are essential to ensure success on our priority issues.

The 112th Congress presented us with the ideal opportunity to build awareness of FLA and the time to build relationships with Congressional offices. FLA's visible leadership as an advocate for private forest landowners in Washington, DC is paying dividends and bolstering the awareness of key issues that impact your ability to own and manage your property. However, your ACTIVE involvement and response to FLA’s Call to Actions will continue to be key in the 113th Congress.

Just like the investments you make in your land, forests and business, you expect to yield returns. You should also expect the association to which you contribute money to do the same and we work hard each and every day to ensure you’re proud to write a check to support our efforts on your behalf. We take calling ourselves the leading grassroots advocate promoting the rights of all private landowners—regardless of size, corporate structure, location, certification status, or tax classification – seriously and treat every dollar we receive as though it is being invested in our own land, forests or business. FLA continues to forge deep in-roads in Washington, DC and deliver returns on your investment in us and I would like to thank you for your support and involvement in FLA and encourage you to contact me at sjones@forestlandowners.com if I can ever be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Scott Jones
CEO
