Don’t underestimate the power of YOUR relevance!
If you don’t take action, someone with an opposing view will.

Today, FLA CEO Scott Jones is in Washington along with board members of the National Alliance of Forest Landowners, meeting with members of Congress. You can add credence to their messages by making your voice heard from outside the Beltway.

One of the most effective tools of advocacy is mobilizing grassroots. When a policymaker really wants to know how an issue impacts landowners on the ground, they turn to their constituents.

Everyday, organizations and citizens (many of which take an opposing viewpoint) contact elected officials. If you do not let your member of Congress know about legislation that could benefit or harm you as a private forest landowner, Congressmen will not likely support or co-sponsor favorable legislation.

A member of Congress can be swayed by a single heartfelt, articulate message from a constituent; oftentimes it's the sheer volume of communications that persuades them. Don’t underestimate the power of YOUR relevance and opinions expressed to elected officials by a simple email message.

You can assist in this effort by sending your message to Congress--Take action TODAY! Click here to tell your Representatives and Senators to co-sponsor ALL the legislation being supported by FLA.

House Delays Funding For Far Reaching Ocean Policy Plan

The House of Representatives approved the Fiscal Year 2013 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2013 (H.R. 5326) on May 9. The bill includes a provision supported by FLA that prohibits the use of funds appropriated under this bill to implement the new National Ocean Policy. This provision was added through an amendment to the underlying bill that was offered by Rep. Bill Flores (TX). The amendment passed the House in a bipartisan 246-174 vote.

Following passage of the underlying bill, National Ocean Policy Coalition Executive Director Brent Greenfield issued the following statement: “By including a time-out in implementation of the National Ocean Policy, this bill provides an important opportunity to address the many concerns expressed by citizens, businesses, and communities across the country regarding the development and implementation of this new initiative. The National Ocean Policy Coalition has long maintained that further policy development and implementation should be suspended until Congress, user groups, and the public have been fully engaged and all potential impacts have been assessed and are understood."

FLA’s concern arises from a section of the plan that addresses inland and rural sources of non-point source pollution in which forested watersheds are specifically targeted.
