MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SUPPORT EXTENDING THE U.S.-CANADA SOFTWOOD LUMBER AGREEMENT, IF ENFORCED

On October 19, 2011, 23 Members of Congress sent a letter to United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk expressing their conditional support for extending the U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement that is set to expire in October of 2013. The Members’ condition was premised on the principle that there exists a direct linkage between trade agreement enforcement and saving U.S. jobs – and as such, strong, timely, and effective enforcement of America’s trade agreements is essential. The Members urged USTR Kirk to ensure that any future lumber trade agreement violations by Canada be addressed expeditiously.

The Forest Landowners Association supports this effort and has partnered with the U.S. Lumber Coalition to gain congressional support for their efforts. You can join us in our efforts to ensure a healthy forest industry by asking your House Member to join the Lumber Trade Caucus by contacting the offices of one of the four co-chairs: Congressman DeFazio (D-OR; Travis Joseph at 202-225-6416), Congressman Jones (R-NC; Joshua Bowlen at 202-225-3415), Congressman Michaud (D-ME; Nora Todd at 202-225-6306), or Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers (R-WA; Kim Betz or Shaughnessy Murphy at 202-225-2006).

Please tell your Representative that a healthy forestry industry matters to you, your community, and your state, and ask him or her to join the House Lumber Trade Caucus. You can reach your Representative’s office via the House switchboard at 202-224-3121.
