University Membership Benefits

As a university with an active forestry or natural resources program, you are producing the next generation of forest landowners and forestry professionals. University members help promote private forest landowners and other alumni who benefit from the forestry profession and America’s forests.

FLA also has a separate entity, the Forest Landowner Foundation, which provides information and education to assist landowners in caring for their forests, and awards scholarships each year to university students pursuing a degree in a natural-resources related field.

The Forest Landowners Association serves its corporate members with:

Faculty Memberships
Policy Advocacy
Forest Landowner Magazine
Fast Facts e-Newsletter
The Land Report Magazine
Education and Networking Opportunities
Discounted Insurance Products
Online Resources

Faculty Memberships
Keep your department’s faculty updated on national legislation and new technology affecting private forestland. University membership includes three individual memberships for faculty and staff.

Policy Advocacy
Three key components constitute the Forest Landowners Association’s (FLA) ongoing federal policy advocacy that protects and enhances the property rights of private forest landowners across the United States: direct lobbying, targeted campaign contributions, and national grassroots mobilization. Through direct lobbying, FLA delivers messages about forestry-related issues directly to crucial members of Congress and regulatory agencies who have the power to make decisions that impact private forest landowners. Targeted campaign contributions via the Forest Landowners Association Political Action Committee (FLA-PAC) help FLA to secure access to those very members of Congress whom FLA and its members have worked to influence. Finally, the private forest landowners who mobilize at the grassroots level strengthen those lobbying messages with personal messages to their members of Congress.

As part of our government affairs effort, FLA, along with the National Association of University Forest Resource Programs (NAUFRP), works to keep and increase the McIntire-Stennis Program. FLA has effectively worked to maintain this funding in a formula format rather than competitive format. Competitive funding would more than likely result in the loss of funding for basic research projects through the universities, which is critical for the continued success of private forest landowners. FLA also lobbies Congress to increase funding for the Renewable Resources Extension Act (RREA), the nation’s leading forestry extension program.

Forest Landowner magazine
Forest Landowner magazine presents private forest landowners across the country with guidance on forestland management options, applications of current forestry research, and national legislative issues that helps them sustain their forestland ownership. A benefit of membership in the Forest Landowners Association, Forest Landowner is published six times a year and draws from the expertise of top forestry professionals, not only in authorship, but also in the volunteer committee that is responsible for procuring the content that is specifically designed to serve private forest landowners. Members of the Forest Landowners Association also have access to searchable magazine archives. Reported as the most popular benefit, 94% of members give their copies of Forest Landowner to 1 to 3 additional readers.

Gain exposure for your university’s forestry research by submitting articles for possible publication in Forest Landowner to Sarah Sturm, Forest Landowner Editor. Your university will also receive ten copies of each issue of Forest Landowner to provide as a resource to students studying forestry and natural resources.

Fast Facts e-Newsletter
Fast Facts is the Forest Landowners Association’s bi-weekly e-newsletter that alerts members of current government affairs issues affecting them, in order to mobilize its national grassroots network on behalf of private forest landowners across the country.

University members receive an unlimited number of Fast Facts subscriptions for faculty and staff.

NEW: The Land Report magazine
Published quarterly, The Land Report provides news, information, and insight into America’s land for existing and potential landowners. The Land Report also profiles passionate landowners, identifies investment opportunities, and highlights outdoor gear and equipment. Members reporting acres will be mailed each issue; all other members enjoy access to a digital version of each issue on the FLA website.

Education and Networking Opportunities
Our annual conference, advocacy day in Washington, DC, and various landowner meetings around the country attract our most active and influential members, and provide the perfect opportunity for you to connect with potential clients.

Regional and Local Meetings
Throughout the year, we host meetings around the country to connect you landowners in your local community. FLA works with our university members to host landowner meetings that offer new ideas, new solutions, and new methods for landowner challenges. These local and regional meetings provide valuable recognition for your university and the opportunity to showcase your educational outreach efforts to engaged landowners.

National Forest Landowners Conference
The Forest Landowners Association’s Annual Conference provides private forest landowners with direct access to top experts and service and product providers in forestry who furnish the knowledge they require to make informed management decisions that safeguard their forestland investments. At a discounted rate for members, you have the valuable opportunity to network with these leaders in the forest industry and the most active members of FLA. University members also enjoy a special Dean’s Reception during the conference. The next conference is June 8–10, 2011, at Colonial Williamsburg Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia. Members receive a discounted registration rate.

Discounted Insurance Products
Available exclusively to members of the Forest Landowners Association (FLA), the Forest Landowners Insurance Program offers policies for hunt lease liability, vacant land liability, consulting forester liability, and health care coverage for individuals or employers. Over 5,000 landowners, clubs, and foresters and nearly 3 million acres are covered under the program. Call (800) 658-7047 or visit the insurance program website for more information.
