The Forest Landowners Association Takes Lead Role in Establishing the House Lumber Trade Caucus

The Forest Landowners Association (FLA) and the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports are working together to establish a bipartisan caucus within the U.S. House of Representatives that will work to promote the trade of lumber on a fair and level playing field. The unprecedented downturn in the U.S. forestry industry over the past several years has shown that American forest landowners and softwood lumber products manufacturers are linked in both good and bad times. That is why FLA is working to establish a caucus to specifically focus on the functioning of the Softwood Lumber Agreement: the House Lumber Trade Caucus.

Canada is a valuable trading partner; however, when their government owns almost all of the forestland, they can literally give away their trees to keep sawmills and their employees working. Forest landowners and U.S. sawmills cannot compete with the Canadian government in this type of unfair trade. The current Softwood Lumber Agreement helps mitigate Canada’s actions, but it needs to be effectively enforced and strengthened. In order to succeed in these efforts, we need to make sure that our lawmakers in Washington are engaged.

We need your help! Please call your Members of Congress and ask them to become a member of the House Lumber Trade Caucus by contacting the office of Rep. Peter DeFazio. Find the contact information for your Members of Congress on the FLA website’s CapWiz page.
